Chamber in the News - Halton Hills mayor, MPP debate plan to appoint regional chairs
At our April 7, 2026 Power Breakfast, A Conversation with Local Leaders, we were joined by Herb, a reporter from HaltonHillsToday.ca, who captured an important and timely discussion on provincial power and local planning.
The conversation focused on the Ontario government’s proposal to appoint regional chairs, including in Halton Region, and revealed a sharp divide between Wellington Halton Hills MPP Joseph Racinsky and Halton Hills Mayor Ann Lawlor.
Mayor Lawlor shared concerns that a provincially appointed regional chair would weaken local representation and shift planning control away from municipalities. She warned that the change could reshape how communities grow, affecting density, housing types, and overall community character. Lawlor emphasized that from her perspective, planning in Halton Hills is not broken, and that housing delays are more closely tied to development activity, not municipal decision making.
MPP Racinsky, on the other hand, said the proposed change is about giving the province the tools it needs to deliver on housing commitments. He explained that an appointed chair would act as a provincial representative with strong powers to push infrastructure and housing projects forward and reduce regional delays. Racinsky also raised concerns about representation at the regional level, arguing that Halton Hills and Milton are often outvoted by larger municipalities like Oakville and Burlington.
Both leaders agreed on one central theme: the proposal reflects a significant shift toward increased provincial control over local government and planning.
This is just a snapshot of the perspectives shared during the breakfast. To explore the issue in more depth, including additional context and direct quotes from both leaders, read the full article by Herb on HaltonHillsToday.ca.
